Desolation – High Fantasy, Brought Low

Desolation is a post-apocalyptic fantasy roleplaying game from Graymalkin Designs. The concept (a more original one, I might add) is a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting in a high fantasy world, set eighteen months after the world was nearly brought to an end. Like modern day post-apocalyptic settings, the characters in the world are those who have survived the devastation of the war.

The core rulebook includes everything you need to play the game. It uses the Ubiquity Roleplaying System and a unique freeform set of magic rules unlike any other game. Players will recognize some, but not all, of the playable character races, which include: gnomes, mongrels, desert dwarves, elves, humans from the Ascondean Empire, humans from the Warlands, the diminutive island folk, and sea-faring rovers.

A friend of mine picked up this game at a convention not long after it was published. He has raved about it to me ever since. It also gives players an introduction to the Ubiquity Roleplaying System if they’ve never experienced it before. Go check it out!

I love this setting and book. I’ve always enjoyed gritty, trying to survive, types of games. On the podcast “the games the thing” they interviewed the three guys that authored the book. Their idea behind the book was to create a fantasy setting that you would want to play in, and then destroying it. It leaves your character with such a sense of loss that can be played out in many different ways. Also old grudges and prejudices must be dealt with. It really worked for me. It also opens the possibility of starting a game in the “before” and playing through the apocalypse. If anyone is interested, check out “the games the thing” episode 39. You can find it on i-tunes as a free download.
