Forum Starter Pack – A Small Roleplaying Forums List
-
Here is a basic starter list for people interested in reading about roleplaying games in online forums. Here is the list, in no particular order.
http://www.rpg.net/ - RPGnet – One of the biggest, if not the biggest roleplaying forum online. It isn’t tied to any specific game and has thousands of posts. It is extremely active and covers any roleplaying topic out there. If you play a lot of different roleplaying games and only want to use one forum, this would be the forum to use.
http://forums.dumpshock.com/ - Shadowrun Dumpshock – I put this forum on the list because it is a great example of a few things. One, there community is pretty solid, respectful, and very focused about their game. Two, Shadowrun has changed owner hands a couple times. Players were occasionally left without an official forum at times. Dumpshock served as the primary forums where Shadowrun players gathered, and pretty much still remains that spot today. The company doesn’t always make a forum the ‘official’ forum, the players do.
http://www.therpgsite.com/ - TheRPGSite – This forum is somewhat similar to RPGnet, except not so large and commercialized. TheRPGSite pretty much covers any topic that has to do with roleplaying. They have a pretty loyal and active posting group. I don’t post here very often, but I’ve read a ton of threads here throughout the years.
http://forums.gleemax.com/ - Wizards of the Coast – The official Wizards of the Coast forums that include the Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars roleplaying game. There are a ton of forums here about everything WotC offers, so sometimes it can take a while to find the exact forum you want. The variety of posters you see here is pretty varied too, due to the different product lines that WotC offers.
http://forums.white-wolf.com/ - White Wolf – Anything and everything from the World of Darkness setting, to their individual games like Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, and all the others. It actually is a really good resource if you’re running horror-related games too, like Call of Cthulhu.
http://www.roleplaygateway.com/ - RolePlayGateway – I don’t post in this forum, but I do read some of their material. They also are the only forum I found that has an open chat application and a Ventrilo server.
What roleplaying forums do you use?

There’s the Forge: http://www.indie-rpgs.com with heavy moderation, dense jargon and heavy analysis of rpg theory. Worth reading if one is interested in theory and can pick what threads to read.
There’s Story games: http://www.story-games.com which is a forum dedicated to story-centric roleplaying games and their ilk. One of the most civil and welcoming forums on the internet from what I have seen.
