RoleplayingPro – Best of 2008

RoleplayingPro was created in late 2008. As a relatively new entrant to the world of roleplaying blogs, I’d like to take a look back at what we were able to accomplish in 2008.

Most Controversial PostCommon Mistakes That Roleplayers Make – Part 1 & 2

This post was able to garner multiple threads on the Shadowrun Dumpshock forums with the primary thread earning over 285 replies. Between the two posts on RoleplayingPro, they earned over 600 views making them the most viewed posts on RoleplayingPro for 2008. It also spawned other copy threads, some constructive and some not-so-constructive. All in all, it easily earned me the most hate mail and hate posts of anything I wrote this year. I learned a ton from writing these two articles, but the most important thing was: If you’re going to be more than just a ‘feel good’ blogger, you better have some thick skin versus criticism.

Most Well-Received PostMy D&D 4e Character Sucks! How Do I Fix It?

This post was featured in the Critical-Hits blog carnival with the topic of “Transitions and Transformations.” It was easily the most well-received post I placed on RoleplayingPro and posted in various forums. There are a lot of people that viewed this post, many who gave good, constructive feedback, and overall I got a lot of good replies about it.

Best ReviewReview of Sundered Skies (Savage Worlds)

I didn’t do a lot of reviews this year. And this wasn’t necessarily my best written review, but it was my favorite. I bought Sundered Skies and the Savage Worlds system book after watching Kurt Wiegel’s review of it. Once I got the game, I wasn’t disappointed. The world was very unique with an easy-to-play system. I really like both Sundered Skies and the Savage Worlds system and plan on doing more articles about both in the near future.

    Best Game Session PostNo Mercy

I only actually posted two game session posts this year (I wrote more but didn’t post some). There were a couple reasons for this. One, game session posts take a while and, honestly, they don’t generate a lot of traffic or comments for the time you invest in them. Two, I’m not a professional novelist. I’m a blogger. And I think I’m going to leave the storytelling to novelists while I stick to blogging. And three, quite frankly regarding the bloggers that do write about game sessions, I think there are a lot of other bloggers that do that better than me. I’ve got a lot more to learn about game session blogging.

    Best PictureNo Mercy Final Battle

And the winner is… okay this isn’t about movies, but rather the best blog picture of 2008 that I posted.  I actually had a lot of really good pictures from our gaming sessions that I didn’t post.  I should make a post with all of the cool gaming pictures I’ve collected over the last few months.  I can definitely say as a person who reads blogs, I love to see visual aspects of what other people are doing in their games.

For a blog that started out as just a hobby, RoleplayingPro has grown a lot quicker than I anticipated.  I made a lot of mistakes this year, but I also learned a lot.  I think RoleplayingPro is progressing well as a blog and I am looking forward to what 2009 is going to bring.

  1. I’ll be looking forward to seeing 2009′s results! Here’s to a great New Year.

John Lewis’s last blog post..Embrace the Abstract

  2. I have a lot of goals on tap for 2009! You’ll be seeing them here shortly, hehe.

  3. A little problem: I can’t get the comment feed in my reader. The link evidently just gives the normal article feed.

    (This makes conversations difficult.)

  4. Thanks for the information, Tommi. I’ll look into that and see if I can resolve it on my end.
