Which Game Do You Bring?
-
Tourq’s Tipjar, #1
Do you bring more to the table than you take away? If you could assess yourself as a player, what would your grade be? Take the quiz and find out! For each question, make one selection, then add up your points. Good luck!
PLAYERS:
(1) When making a character, I make my racial and class selections based on:
- Character concept, mostly. (10 pts.)
- Needing to fill a certain role. (5 pts.)
- Best combination of bonuses. (0 pts.)
(2) Character Background:
- My character has a three-paragraph background, and is somehow linked to at least one other PC (10 pts.)
- My character has a three-page background. (7 pts.)
- My character’s background can be summed up in a couple of sentences. (3 pts.)
- My character does not have a background, or a name! (0 pts.)
(3) Character Concept:
- My character has a unique personality, one with good qualities and bad faults. I gave him some fun quirks and maybe an Achilles Heel. (10 pts.)
- My character is different from my last one, but I don’t really have too many ways to prove it. Aside from my background/race/class, I don’t have much that distinguishes him from any of my other characters. (5 pts.)
- My character is a collection of stats and powers, because I came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I’m all out of bubblegum. (0 pts.)
(4) Character Compatibility:
- My character meshes well with the party, or at least he tries. (10 pts.)
- My character concept might be a problem, as he simply doesn’t fit in with the rest of the group (evil character in a group of good characters, etc.). (0 pts.)
(5) Taking care of the GM, since he spends time on preparation, and money on supplies:
- I make sure to bring extra food or sodas occasionally. (10 pts.)
- I make sure to thank the GM for running the game. (10 pts.)
- The GM spends too much time and money on our game. (0 pts.)
(6) Rules Lawyer:
- Fun before rules! (10 pts.)
- Hey, we should all be following the same rules. If I think the GM or another player does something incorrectly, I speak up. That way, everyone is on the same page. (9 pts.)
- If the GM uses a rule incorrectly, I call him on it. Players get a free pass. (0 pts.)
(7) Player Goal:
- My character has a story. I’d like to see it unfold, so I make the effort. (10 pts.)
- Hey, I’m just here to have fun. (5 pts.)
- Hey, I’m here to win.I don’t care about the story that the GM or other players are trying to tell. (0 pts.)
(8) Getting Into Character:
- As often as possible, I speak as if I were my character. (10 pts.)
- I’m no actor, but I make an effort. (5 pts.)
- Look, I just like rolling dice. (0 pts.)
(9) Am I a Hijacker?
- I don’t presume to know what’s best for another player character, or how certain events should unfold. I play my character, and my character alone. (10 pts.)
- When the GM glosses over a rule or situation, and I have already stated my disagreement, I’ll keep pushing it anyway. I don’t mind trying to take control away from the GM. (0 pts.)
(10) Where’s My Attention?
- I keep non-game topics to a minimum, and generally remain distraction-free. (10 pts.)
- I’m here to hang with friends; gaming is simply a bonus. So I’ll text people, surf the web, or carry on conversations while the game is in play. (0 pts.)
(11) Dependability:
- I’m usually there, on time, ready to rock and roll. (10 pts.)
- I’m usually there, but I’ll either be late or have to level-up my character. (5 pts.)
- Gaming is not my #1 priority. I miss a few game sessions because I simply choose to do other things. (0 pts.)
(12) Player Fiat:
- When our group rides into town, I tell the GM about my cousin, a blacksmith, who might help us out with a place to stay and some discounted supplies. Of course, I also state how he has had a chip on his shoulder ever since I rolled in the hay with his girl.(10 pts.)
- When our group rides into town, I ask the GM about finding a blacksmith. (5 pts.)
- Hey, I’m just along for the ride. (0 pts.)
(13) Spotlight
- I split from the group once in a while, and only if it will enhance the story. (10 pts.)
- Never split the group! (5pts.)
- There’s nothing wrong with splitting from the group for 20 minutes so that my character can rob the smithy. (0 pts.)
(14) Combat Flair
- I love rolling the die, and then roleplaying my attack action. I add flair to it so that, aside from game mechanics, my character fights with a certain style. (10 pts.)
- I like the tactical aspect of the game, playing up movement/flanking/etc. (5 pts.)
- “I rolled a 22. Did I hit?” (0 pts.)
(15) Metagaming?
- Even though I pretty much know everything, I play my character none-the-wiser. Nor do I try to stumble into information or an area on “accident,” so that I get to take part or gain the edge. After all, I’m not trying to “win” the game. (10 pts.)
- I prefer to have secret stuff spoken in a different room, so the rest of the group doesn’t know about it. (7 pts.)
- I try to ignore certain bits of information that my character wouldn’t know, but it’s hard! (3 pts.)
- Nah, I’m in it to win it. (0 pts.)
Add up your score and post your grade!

The writer of this article got a “C” on this quiz, but I think he cheated.
Next Up: Which Game Do You Bring? – GM Style

I absolutely LOVE “Player Fiat” and “Combat Flair.” I need to do more of those. Regrettably , and now that I read this article, I have to apologize to my group for being a “Hijacker” and “Where’s My Attention.”
Good article, I’m looking forward to the GM Quiz.

Oh, sorry. I got a “B.”
July 27, 2009 at 10:25 am
I ended up with a C myself.

Great quiz. One of these days when I’m actually a Player in a game I’ll have to take it.
Maybe we should have a gamemaster’s quiz…

I’m not trying to stir up any nests here (so you don’t need to kill me with fire) but this is a bad quiz…
In particular the premise that certain behaviours are universally (read, gaming and socially) bad while others are to be emulated is quite tricky and I feel does not add anything particular interesting to the proverbial table.
Maybe if only taken as a mildly amusing entertainment? In any case, I’m not particularly fond of it although I can see the humorous subtext.

@ Gab & Bonemaster – I plead the 5th on this one. Although, I can honestly that some days I bring my ‘A-Game’ while others I bring less to the table. I’m sure everyone is like that though.
@ John Lewis – Let’s face it, you’ll never be able to play. You were born to GM…
@ Federico – You’re not stirring up a nest at all. This quiz was definitely meant to be both fun and informative. Your personal playstyle will definitely differ between each group. I didn’t write this quiz, but it actually helped me look at some of my own roleplaying behaviors a little bit and reflect.

Not fair, everyone. If you post a reply, you have to post your grade. Hey, I got a “C.” I take this quiz as a means to helping me be a better gamer, not a social gamer, but a gamer’s gamer. I may never be able to bring my A-game, but I’m sure I’ll have a much better gaming experience if I try.
@John: I’m sure you’ve been a player at some point. Let’s hear it! The GM’s quiz is coming shortly, though…
@Federico: In truth, there are a few hard questions, ones that I don’t necessarily like answering. But that’s OK, because I see it as an opportunity to help remind myself of the behaviours I’d like to avoid, while striving to exhibit others that I admire. I will be retaking this quiz in six months to see if it has helped.
As far as the validity of the quiz, I’d like to think that I know what I’m talking about. I’ve gone to school for a long time and have earned six degrees of Kevin Bacon… wait… wrong game. Damn.
Yeah, I’m just a gamer looking to improve and have fun. Hope this quiz helps others to do the same!

Good job, Tourq, on writing an article that both offends AND inspires me. At first, I thought, “Wow, what balls this guy has in assuming what my A-Game is.” Then, after thinking about it for a second, I realized most of your questions are spot-on. My problem is that I have always thought that I did bring my A-Game. Reading your quiz initially made me think that you were saying that I didn’t. I had to take a second to realize, “No, this is only your opinion. It’s what you consider being a good roleplayer.” I like that it was even done in a lighthearted/amusing kind of way.
After reading the quiz a second time, I conclude that I like it. Most quizzes that I see on blogs are hoaky; this one made me think. I’m going to direct my fellow players to take it as well.
I got a low B.

I also like the “Combat Flair” and “Player Fiat.” I will be trying those next session. As far as Character Background stuff and Compatability, my character pretty new, so I still have time to work on those. I feel like a goof for not doing it yet. I never even thought about thanking the GM.
I got a C. Thanks for the quiz!
July 28, 2009 at 12:06 am
@ Chris – Okay man, here’s my score. Since I tend to go up and down as a player, I based it off of my last session of play. I got a 116 which is barely a B.
However, It’s probably a bit higher because my GM pulls my into the story. He’s written a significant portion of my character background for me. But I’ve added some funny characteristics, like playing a Cleric that sometimes pretends he’s a Paladin, just like his brother. I think if I had a sucky GM, I’d probably be a lot lower on this list (like in the D area).
July 28, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Okay, Chris, I got an A-. I think I was evaluating fairly – but you let me know!!!
I like the quiz, but have one question. If you have a three page background that links to at least one PC and adds several NPCs/places/situations/etc. but still leaves plenty of room for charachter growth – is that still a 7 or a 10?
July 29, 2009 at 12:27 am
Got me a “B” but I am writing this in a Scottish accent that sounds Australian so I demand bonus points.
@Federico – I think this quiz was designed as a tongue-in-cheek look at certain habits at the gaming table from the author’s perspective. What it does accomplish is to get you thinking about your own style of play to see if you might be able to make the game more fun for yourself and the rest of your group, no matter the style of play.
July 29, 2009 at 8:03 am
Ok, good replies and good grades. Sam, SonofDayerethsMom, and Andy V, I’d say you all get bonus points!
But really, the grade is not what the point of the quiz is. The point is that I hope everyone can read the quiz, find one thing and say, “Oh yeah, this is one area I could do differently, to make it more fun for everyone.”
Different strokes for different folks, of course. Different areas apply to different people. Me, on the other hand, have a lot of areas to work on.
Thanks everyone!

I think this is a nice gauge for player compatibility. Without judgeing your score as either “good” or “bad” it still reflects a certain play style. If you are a happy “C” player and are enjoying your game you may want to play with other “C” players. Playing with an “A” player may just drag your game down. Likewise “A” players may have their experience brought down by a “D” player at the table.
Ultimately I think one of the keys to great gaming is having a group of people who enjoy a certain style of play together. Not gaming clones mind you, but people who enjoy many of the same elements of the game.
You know, I think I see a future article on the horizon…

I got an A! And I’m not just a GM, I’m a storyteller GM.
August 4, 2009 at 3:47 pm
OK, I can see where your bias lies–luckily I share it wholeheartedly! I scored a B+.
Good role-playing tip in question 12. Never occurred to me. I’ll have to give it a try.
- Thanks!

@ Katana: Awesome! Glad to see that you bring your A Game!
@ C.L. Fewlass: I love #12, Player Fiat. That’s a strong one that should be used by everyone from time to time. It really says, “I’m contributing to the story” like nobody’s business.
August 6, 2009 at 8:24 am
@ Stevens: It also helps the DM and makes the story-telling experience more of a group effort and less of a one-man-show.
