Pages: 48War of Worldcraft is an introductory adventure for the HERO System 6th Edition. The adventure storyline is that robots attack a sales event for the world’s biggest online superhero roleplaying game. The players of this game begin falling unconscious at their computers and the superheroes must find the supervillain in the game and free the trapped players. Even though the game is designed for the HERO System, 6th Edition, it could realistically be ported into any superhero system.
The adventure is divided into three parts and a finale. Part One is “Mayhem At The Maxi-Mart”, where the evil villain, Download, attempts to capture an important individual and take the MMORPG company hostage. Part Two is about the finding the villain, Download. Part Three is about Download’s real and virtual bases. The last part is the Grand Finale which concludes the adventure and hopefully sees the superheroes defeat Download and stop his evil plans.
One of the cool things about this adventure is that it isn’t an A to B to C adventure where the PCs are led in a straight line, simply following bread crumbs from one point to another. There are actually several different methods in each section to accomplishing the goals and continuing the storyline. I heavily prefer these types of adventures as both a gamemaster and a player, because it gives the players more freedom to do what they want instead of feeling like they are just pawns there to act out a pre-determined storyline.
The adventure is full of humorous comments and clever writing hooks. One of my favorite early lines about the players of the MMORPG, Megaworld, states, “… the original bodies of his hostages start to deteriorate from lack of Mountain Dew and Cheesy Puffs…” It later talks about how the MMORPG is the most popular superhero MMORPG on Earth, because it is based on the tabletop Hero System published by Hero Games. While not overly witty, the adventure is written in a very humorous way that should make fans of MMORPGs and the Hero System chuckle from time to time.
War of Worldcraft can be purchased from BlackWyrm Games in E-Book format for $6.00 or print format for $9.95.
